India’s No.1 SUV, the bolero gets compact, powerful and fun to drive in an all-new power-packed avatar, Bolero Power+. The new SUV resembles its predecessor as both are different to tell apart, the similarities end there. The Bolero Power+ in every aspect delivers more than the age-old Bolero, be it power, mileage, handling or even warranty. You get all these updates for about a Lakh Rupees less than the Bolero. Engineers at Mahindra cleverly shaved chunks off the bumper to fit the Bolero Power+ into the sub-4-meter category and pass on tax benefits (17.5 percent) to customers. The SUV gets a powerful new 1.5-litre diesel mHawk D70 diesel motor that delivers 70 BHP, 8hp more than the 2.5L version, and 195 NM torque with improved mileage.
Right from its launch, the Bolero made a reputation as a reliable and rugged people carrier. Stepping into the 18th year of its career and being the No.1 selling SUV for nine years in a row, the all-new Bolero Power Plus gears up to dominate the roads once again. The Power+ is available in three variants – ZLX, SLX, and SLE priced between INR 7.2 and 8.2 lakhs.
Mahindra Bolero Power Plus Exterior
The Bolero Power+, aimed at giving out tax benefits to its customers with maximum utility, undergoes a host of cosmetic changes while retaining the Classic Bolero’s creases. Engineers at Mahindra have ingeniously crafted the bumpers in an inward sloping manner shaving off 112 mm. The rear foot-plate too has been redesigned in a manner that the Bolero Power+ qualifies as a compact car.
The new compact Bolero Power+ is 3995 mm long, 1745mm wide and 1880mm tall with a wheelbase of 2680 mm. The compact SUV is shorter than its 4107mm predecessor with minor tweaks to its exteriors. The Bolero Power+ comes with bold new muscular and solid bumpers, a classy front grille with chrome inserts and honeycomb mesh making a bold statement on-road and off it.
The compact SUV also gets body-coloured ORVMs that blend well with the exterior styling. New blue vision headlamps make a bold statement even while turned off. Contemporary decals on the body give Power+ a unique look. However, it is difficult to say the two apart at a glance despite new Power+ badging around the body.
Mahindra Bolero Power Plus Engine
The Bolero Power+ gets a powerful and efficient, new peppy mHawk D70 diesel engine that churns out 70 BHP and 195 NM torque with improved mileage. The D70 diesel motor delivers a whole 8 BHP more than the 2.5L version that produced 62 BHP with an equivalent amount of torque. The refined engine also promises a mileage figure of over 16.5 KMPL which is on par with most of the compact hatches being retailed in across India.
Power figures might not seem impressive on paper, but the way the SUV performs on road makes all the difference. Bolero Power+ clocks 0-100 KMPH 4.5 seconds faster than the outgoing model and improved in-gear acceleration times enable the SUV to achieve peak performance in shorter durations. The new Bolero engine has been super-refined and doesn’t sound coarse despite minimal noise insulation.
The Bolero Power+ makes driving around the city a breeze with Mahindra making the rev available at the lower end. The short gearing that slots well adding to the peppy responsive engine. The mHawk D70 comes mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission and micro-hybrid technology making the engine best-in-class. All three variants come equipped with the mHawk D70 engine, unlike a few premium cars that have multiple engine options.
Mahindra Bolero Power Plus Interior
The Bolero Power+ boasts cabin setup identical to the outgoing model. The compact SUV gets the same cabin space of the Bolero Classic as Mahindra has innovatively shortened the vehicle without compromising on cabin space with the bumpers alone being trimmed to give it a compact car profile.
However, the Power+ gets a brand new steering, a bold new digital instrument cluster with Digital Information System (DIS) and better seats with padded support. The new compact Bolero gets lightly shaded interiors with large windows and thin pillars giving the cabin a spacious and airy feel. The seven-seater layout with jump seats on the third row gives it class-leading boot space similar to the Scorpio.
Basic features like Air conditioning and power steering offered as standard equipment across all three variants. However, the top variants get an audio system, micro-hybrid system, and power windows. The ZLX models get additional features like ‘distance to empty’, average mileage and a rear washer wiper.
Mahindra Bolero Power Plus Technology
Standard features on the Bolero Power+ SLE include power steering, air conditioning, digital instrument cluster, engine immobilizer and a remote fuel lid opener. The mid variant gets heating function for the AC, front and rear power windows, central locking, remote key unlocking, and charging points. The SLX features an audio system with USB support, while the base trim retails with an audio system with CD MP3.
However, additional features like Mahindra’s micro-hybrid system, driver information system that shows ‘distance to empty’, current mileage and a rear washer wiper are added to the top-end ZLX model.
Mahindra Bolero Power Plus Suspension and Tyres
The whole range comes with P215/65 R15, Radial Tubeless tyres with independent suspension and rigid leaf spring in the rear to make the ride as comfortable as possible. No pothole is too big and bumps are hardly felt in this sturdy built SUV.
Bolero being a rugged vehicle and a versatile people carrier is known for its true-blue SUV character and comforts and tech package. Despite being easy to maintain and own, the new Power Plus is more affordable with its competitive pricing for an entry-level SUV.
Mahindra Bolero Power Plus Price and Variants
The Power+ is available in three variants: SLE, SLX and ZLX priced between INR 7.2 and 8.2 lakhs making it the most affordable SUV. Mahindra has innovatively cut
a few corners and packaged this entry-level SUV aggressively as a go-to choice for SUV enthusiasts.
Mahindra Bolero Power Plus Competition
There are not many seven-seater diesel vehicles in this price bracket, making the Bolero unmatched in terms of value for money. The Tata Sumo which can be considered a rival loses out by being overpriced
